[edit] Hardware (USB) Considerations
Unless you are using a program like Trunker to control a second scanner, there is little need to have an external level converter or similar to add PC control to a scanner. These days, the problem usually lies in the fact that newer PCs don't have serial ports, and you need to use a USB converter to drive it. Installing these devices can lead to problems, particularly in the installation. Please see the Connecting Scanners to USB article for more information.

When you are a newcomer, and want to use software to program and/or back up the contents of your scanner, the natural question is 'which is the best'? While it's always true that the 'best' software is in the eye of the user, generally speaking there are some packages that are much more popular than others.
Scancat Lite Plus has been visible for awhile now, and is beginning to support the new GRE scanners. However, as documented on several occasions in the various forums, it's not the best choice, in most cases. This article lists the most popular packages, by scanner.

- ScanControl software supports 17 different Uniden scanners, all in one program. It has the ability to directly copy/paste data from the database into an editor without an external program such as Excel. BC95XLT support available from version 6.2, in the Basic edition.
- The UASD (Uniden Advanced System Director) for each scanner is available from the Uniden downloads area.
- ARC software with no link is available from the BuTel homepage. BuTel software is available from Scanner Master.
- The SC230 is a non trunking scanner-only conventional data is supported
